The Protect Software Audio/Video Rights Mangement is based on the content independent mpDRM (Multi Purpose Digital Rights Management) system. mpDRM is interface compatible to Windows Media DRM and based on the open OMA DRM standard while being completely content independent.
Flexibility
mpDRM is flexible enough to be integrated with any kind of video stream or container format. Unlike other solutions mpDRM allows random access within the encrypted stream which enables new usage scenarios. Due to its focus on video it also enables the extension of DRM out of the pure PC solution on to CE platforms.
Tight client side integration
The most vulnerable part of any DRM system is the client side since by the very nature of it a possible attacker has direct access to this component. To effectively protect this, it is indispensable to base the rights management in a hacking proof environment which is tightly integrated with the video management and codec subsystem.
Such a tight integration is achieved by source level integration together with a special security layer around it. The protect software security layer is known to be vary stable and hack proof from our disc based protection systems.
Further, the client side components are individualized to the target system in a way that a security breach on one system does not affect the security on other systems. Also, the client side component can be forced to update by content so in case a security breach a newer DRM client side component update can be enforced. Last, but not least, compromised keys on a client system can be revoked from the server.
Compatible server side framework
Most VOD services today use the Windows Media Rights Management (WMRM) solution from Microsoft. It provides a flexible server side framework that can be used from a variety of programming languages to be integrated with individual workflows.
mpDRM comes with a very similar server side object model to the one in WMRM. Because of this, the server side implementation of mpDRM in addition to, or replacing a WMRM framework should be a straightforward process.
